Fourth Age of the Vaikan
The Fourth Age of the Vaikan begins shortly after the end of the Yallvus Revolution when Rustiagon Dralla took the throne and lasts until the rise of the Karalian Empire, a period of about 6,700 years.
Drallan Federal Monarchy Era
The Drallan Federal Monarchy was built upon the remains of the Altus Empire, formerly lead by the tyrant Altus Banya. Rustiagon Dralla appointed Kauy Chugath as prime minister to reform the government into a constitutional monarchy. Regarding the founding of the DFM, few other concrete facts remain due to the long passage of time as Dralla became seen as a legendary figure. According to folklore, after Dralla proved himself in one on one combat against Altus Banya, the people hailed Dralla as a holy savior representing the second coming of Jamzeze. It was his destiny to guide the Vaikan to explore the heavens, and as such, the Rustiagon bloodline came to be considered divine.
Though Dralla was considered humble by many, a particularly contradicting account to his personality was uncovered. Family tree records discovered in the ruins of the Tomb of Kings showed the Dralla had more than one hundred and fifty wives whom Dralla had slept with in the span of only several days. Though his behavior contradicts the Vaikan idea of the time of faithfulness to a single companion, some believe Dralla did this out of necessity to ensure that the Rustiagon bloodline would never come close to dying out. Ironically, Dralla succeeded as even 7,000 years later, an abundance of preserved DNA survived millenia of decay and neglect of the Tomb of Kings. Solar system exploration Dralla’s wealth and influence lead to an ambition to explore the solar system. Though Altus Banya was actually the first to send probes into space, by the time of Dralla, the technology to mine asteroids became perfected. Within a few decades, colonies were set up on Ackarra, Pelietta, Zarenutha as well as the ice moon of Amath. After these space colonies sent minerals and other resources back to Ucharpli, the DFM experienced a golden age and technological boom. One notable cash crop was the Geolichen potato, discovered in Ackarra fo be capable of surviving harsh, extraterrestrial environments.
The Drallan Federal Monarchy saw a shift towards hedonism in this time. The mass amount of wealth flowing in from other planets enhanced the lifestyles of the population. The first VR companions, a cultural staple of modern Vaikan society, were invented during this time. They took the form of one of many Dralla’s wives so that the populace could inspire to be like their king.
After Dralla’s death, his legacy would continue. A long line of Rustiagon individuals would follow.
Early interstellar exploration and the Nerisuc Incident
Having encountered Omni relics in the past, the Vaikan suspected that intelligent life could still be out there. Records from the Temporal Fountain, a wormhole to the past when the Omni were still active, made clear indications that the Omni at least had a very powerful presence in the Twin Hearts Nebula. However, SETI devices no longer detected any sort of interstellar transmissions or any evidence of faster than light travel in the nearby vicinity. As far as the Vaikan were concerned, the Omni either had long abandoned the Twin Hearts Nebula or a more grim prospect: they were all dead.
Hopes of meeting their predecessors were rekindled as evidence of multiple habitable worlds in nearby star systems were discovered. Specifically, a planet orbiting the quaternary system Eros. The planet was discovered to be covered in oceans boasting a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere which they called Nerisuc. Chances of habitability were also increased when Nerisuc was also discovered to have a moon that could stabilize its orbit which they called Roma. Even though Vaikan had difficulty surviving in humid environments, the Omni were known to have been an aquatic species. It was postulated that the Eros system had the potential to be an Omni colony where they could observe the Szon system remotely - explaining why there were not enough Omni ruins in the Szon system to warrant it being nothing more than research outposts.
Although the Omni were believed to be capable of faster than light travel given the existence of the Temporal Fountain, no examples of FTL engines had been discovered thus far, and the DFM had yet to find a way to replicate it for themselves. The DFM did however have the means for sublight travel, investing into constructing a solar sail that could travel to Eros.
The first interstellar expedition by the Vaikan consisted of constructing observatory habitat on the planet’s moon. Researchers and scientists could safely study Nerisuc without interfering with the planet’s ecosystem. No evidence of the Omni or any ruins were discovered, but what they did find instead was a dangerous, shapeshifting lifeform known as the Lusari.
The Lusari were capable of imitating a Vaikan to take the form of what they find most attractive, then seducing them with a pheromone to become their prey. It showed a breakthrough in extraterrestrial biology - the ability to reconfigure an organism’s DNA very rapidly. However, when one Lusari attacked the researchers, the expedition went awry. The Lusari impersonated the other researchers killing them off one by one and slowly driving the others to insanity, paranoia and hysteria.
Communication between solar systems was slow and difficult at the time. The researchers had no way of sending a timely distress signal. Worse yet, while the DFM did send supplies, they refused to let them return to Ucharpli fearing the Lusari could spread to the Szon system. Supposedly, if a rescue party were sent, they could unknowingly bring back a Lusari. Unfortunately, the surviving researchers were left to die, their final fates unknown as all contact was lost. It is believed they were either consumed by the Lusari or had taken their own lives. For seventy years, not another interstellar expedition was considered, and the DFM instead concentrated on building what they had in their own solar system.
Discovery of New Signals
Decades after the Nerisuc Incident, SETI devices detected a series of signals exchanged throughout the Twin Hearts Nebula. Interestingly, it seemed the signals were directed at them. Expert cryptographers began to decipher the signals noting that it followed a strangely similar lexicon as the Omni language, but much of it had yet to be deciphered. Many believed that the Omni had finally returned after they had covertly witnessed the Vaikan’s attempt at interstellar exploration. Part of the signals contained a map prominently featuring the planet Pelietta. New hypotheses originated, believing the map to lead to some sort of treasure or cache of technology.
However, before the Vaikan could decipher the treasure map, they had received another, more daunting message. Knowledge of the Omni language was limited, but the translation came out to “Submit”. This raised some questions on whether the Omni were truly benevolent, but some believed that there could be multiple factions trying to either harm or help them. It would not be long before they found the answer to their question.
Only two years after receiving the message, extraterrestrial ships were discovered in the solar system. One by one, contact with other colonies was lost until the ships finally showed themselves to Ucharpli shortly after detonating an EMP device to wipe out all communications. Their designs were similar, but not quite the same as what were rumored to be Omni ships. These hostile alien visitors referred to themselves as the Eghos and claimed to be the direct descendants of the Omni. The Eghos were a race of genetic constructs designed to continue the legacy of the Omni after their extinction.
The Eghos mercilessly bombarded Ucharpli’s surface, destroying many of its cities as well as damaging the topmost floor of the 3,000-year old structure Kazel-Hal. In just nine hours, the Eghos had taken complete control of Ucharpli - an event which retroactively became known as the First Sinister War.
Promptly after being conquered, the Vaikan were introduced proper to the Eghos. The Eghos claimed themselves to be the descendants of the Omni, survivors of a purge from 33,000 years ago at the hands of what they referred to as the Minions of the False One - later known to be the Buyuk Empire. The Eghos had hid themselves through cryostasis until they were sure the Buyuk Empire was dead. However, the detection of the Vaikan’s presence in the Eros system was what lead them to awaken prematurely. Even though the Buyuk Empire would not make themselves known to the Twin Hearts Nebula for another 7,000 years, the Eghos were still paranoid of the return of the False One, and thus, believed they had to take desperate measures to ensure other species would not betray them for the False One.
The Eghos had claimed that the reason why the Vaikan were conquered was that they had been too selfish and arrogant. Instead, the Eghos wished to remind them that there were forces in the universe greater than the Vaikan and that the Omni and by extension, the Eghos were the superior species. The Eghos claimed it was their responsibility to shape the galaxy so that every species had a specific purpose to serve them - just like how their ancestors formed their empire.
As the Eghos believed themselves to be superior, they’re first ruling was to immediately ban all forms of religion. Krayhan and other Vaikan gods became outlawed and most public images representing these deities were destroyed and replaced with images of the Eghos. This was because the Eghos claimed religion in general to be evil - their god had abandoned them to spawn the False One, the entity responsible for destroying the Omni Empire. Despite the Eghos’ claims (which for the most part were actually true), the Vaikan internally dismissed it as lies and propaganda to get them to accept their grim situation. Retroactively, the Eghos and their empire became known as the Sinister Hegemony.
As it turned out, in the short time that the Eghos had been awake, they had already conquered six other species, the Lusari included. The Vaikan were merely the most recent. Other member species of the Sinister Hegemony were the Glukar, Avarith, Slothra, Rirath and Malenven. The Eghos planned to have each species serve a specific function - the six others had already gone significant genetic engineering and the Vaikan were next.
The Eghos undertook a project of systematically reshaping of the overall Vaikan population and their genes to be useful for serving the greater good. Their intent was to make an obedient servant species just like they had done with other members of the Sinister Hegemony. Seeing the usefulness of their ability to generate electricity, they chose to optimize the Vaikan for just that purpose by going through a series of genocides. Firstly, they killed off Vaikan which they deemed unusable or unable to work which included the elderly, sick, injured, disabled and even those unable to use electricity. They also segregated the Vaikan by gender and limited the number of fertile females so that they could always keep their population in check and only allow a Vaikan to breed when they deemed it necessary. The gender ratio skewed as disproportionate as 80% male and 20% female.
Afterwards, the Vaikan were put into reeducation camps, attempting to brainwash them into believing that the Eghos were their saviors and that their own pre-existing history was a lie told by the False One. The Eghos went as far as to redecorate existing statues and relics, excavating ancient ruins on Ucharpli to remake them as if the Eghos were there all along. The one area they were unable to reach was the Tomb of Kings, so they just blocked the entrance to it, claiming it to be a forbidden place corrupted by the False One.
The Vaikan were also introduced to jumpgates - ancient FTL structures that had only been recently turned on to allow travel between star systems in hours. Much like livestock, the Vaikan were transported all throughout the Sinister Hegemony to generate electricity where necessary. The Vaikan had quickly discovered that most members of the other species of the Sinister Hegemony had already been brainwashed beyond recognition of their original forms. But the process of brainwashing all Vaikan had yet to be completed. In a few decades, it was expected that all traces of Vaikan deviances would be eliminated - they’d become loyal, obedient slaves to the Eghos with zero signs of resistance supposedly like the six other species of the Sinister Hegemony.
Despite the upcoming grim fate of the Vaikan, one hope still remained. The treasure map to Pelietta sent to the Vaikan from somewhere in the Twin Hearts Nebula seemed to have been sent by an unknown rogue agent. Most assumed it to be a hoax created by the Eghos, but a small minority believed it was a sign that the galaxy had the chance of being something other than a totalitarian nightmare.
The Treasure Map
The decades past and over the years, there were more than a few Vaikan that congregated together by going into hiding. One of the key figures was a Rustiagon named Parlo sowing the seed of hope. He promised that so long as the divine Rustiagon bloodline still existed, there was hope to uncovering the treasure on Pelietta. Parlo searched the other parts of the Sinister Hegemony for species that could accompany him and help him decipher the map.
Parlo discovered that the map itself came from the planet Welthar, the methane-based homeworld of the Avarith. The Avarith’s unique physiology made them much more difficult to make compliant. The Eghos instead resorted to constant threats and loan sharking to keep them in check. Essentially, the Avarith owed the Eghos a neverending debt. But the Avarith, however, had the financial resources to make a proper excavation of Pelietta possible. Parlo promised to share the wealth and knowledge of the Vaikan with the Avarith should they succeed at uncovering the treasure and defeating the Eghos.
After Parlo rounded up a crew of archeologists and mercenaries, the secret expedition to Pelietta began. They managed to get past the Eghos and discover the location of the treasure. What they found was a remarkable discovery - a starmap showing the entire local jumpgate network. Not only that, it contained a larger jumpgate which lead to a nebulae several thousand lightyears away. The Vaikan had learned that the Eghos did not build the jumpgates themselves and even they were still attempting to recolonize and explore the ancient systems. The larger jumpgate needed an immense source of power to reactivate it. Immediately, they began making copies of the starmap onto data discs.
However, at that moment of discovery, one particular Avarith in the group betrayed Parlo outing his act to the Eghos in hopes of being paid for a handsome reward. Parlo and many other key resistance leaders were captured and sentenced to execution. The starmap however went into public circulation being contained on data discs. The Eghos rewarded anyone who destroyed these discs.
Despite this, the Eghos felt they hadn’t done enough. They began to spread more propaganda to encourage their citizens to not only destroy the discs, but to find anyone who was a member of the Rustiagon bloodline and out them as traitors.
Though Parlo was executed, as it turned out, he had an illegitimate child named Gelda. Only a mere twenty years old at the time of her father’s death, Gelda had remained in hiding and was entrusted with a data disc. She had etched the coordinates of the big jumpgate into her shoulder by modifying one of the Eghos’ slave brands. While the last of the data discs were lost along with the rest of the starmap, the location of the large gate remained - a backdoor exit where Vaikan could escape to in hopes of forming a new colony away from the Eghos.
Gelda kept her own existence a secret - unfortunately, a little too well. The general public had thought that the resistance force as well as the Rustiagon bloodline had died out. Gelda did not have the chance to undertake a peaceful effort to rise up against the Eghos, as the general public had already begun to blame the Avarith for the failure.
Second Sinister War
Era of Dual Powers
Allied Sovereign Nations
- Main article: Allied Sovereign Nations
The Allied Sovereign Nations arose in the wake of a multitude of corporatocracies that had ruled over the remnants of the warring factions of the Children of the Dhragolon and the Ramusian Socialist Republic. When the Allied Sovereign Nations first began, the Vaikan were still suffering the skewed gender ratio artificially enforced on them by the Eghos’ genocide about 5,000 years prior. There were still a greater number of males than females, and in spite of that, females were often mistreated and often seen as a means of purely maintaining a decent population. That would change dramatically with the recognition of Vaikan women being bolstered by the powerful crime lord Sokeja Skaista.
Sokeja Skaista had begun life as a slave who worked as an exotic dancer on the planet Jaran. She was highly renowned for her skills, enchanting movements and looks. However, her master Slik Katag was infamously abusive to his slaves. Without batting an eye, if one of his slave girls failed to meet the absurdly high expectations of his clientele, he would toss them in a pit to be eaten by Arkleon tigers. When one of Sokeja’s closest friends was killed by Slik’s Arkleons, she plotted revenge. One night, after seducing Slik and getting him drunk on Dulkolas Ale, she slit at his throat, but deliberately not enough to kill him. After torturing him for hours, she allowed him to get eaten by the same Arkleons that had killed many slave girls. She sought to give her abusive master the most painful death she could, and she enjoyed every cathartic moment of it.
Sokeja Skaista soon rose with her influence and reputation as the one who killed Slik. Her rise in power allowed her to amass many followers. As her presence grew, she became reputed as a matriarch. She fully embraced her beginnings as a dancer, and used her own beauty and charisma to become a powerful crime lord. She brokered information and ancient artifacts. Her spy network was known for being all-female - they were known for seducing other nobles to gather information. She also convinced her followers to become more promiscuous with one another. Males often became willing subjugates who would do anything for Sokeja - their queen. In Sokeja’s name, they would go on the most dangerous missions for her from retrieving artifacts to conquering smaller kingdoms. They had become willing sacrifices for their matron.
Although Sokeja’s methods were questionable, she succeeded in evening out the population to 50/50. The factions that still had skewed populations were eventually assimilated or absorbed as Sokeja’s spies were introduced into the area. The male population was also reduced in what was considered at the time to be a humane way.
Despite this, a few remnant factions disapproved of her methods. A group of assassins known as the Sutemos, disciples of rival crime lord Mylon Sutemos, gathered together in an attempt to kill Sokeja in order to stop her reign from getting out of control. Mylon and his assassins were contract killers who often targeted petty dictators and mob bosses.
When Mylon and Sokeja encountered one another, their first reaction was to immediately try to kill one another. However, both were equally matched in skill. Although most details of the encounter remain unknown having fallen into the realm of mythology, it is thought that their attempts to kill one resulted in what appeared to be a synchronized dance. As they became more in sync, they no longer had a desire to kill one another. They had fallen in love and had slept with one another that night. Legend has it that their emotions resonated so strongly that the resulting electrical reaction between the two of them shut down the power of Sokeja’s palace.
The next morning, both Mylon and Sokeja had made peace with one another and had seen the error of each other’s ways. They chose to marry one another to begin an alliance and a foundation for a new government. This sudden turn of events caught the attention of many nearby star systems who willingly supported the newfound peace. Thus formed the Allied Sovereign Nations.
With two of the most powerful crime lords having made peace with marriage, Mylon and Sokeja decided to promote a society based on pleasure and hedonism. And with that came prosperity with more and more encouragements to explore. Perhaps one of the most important discoveries to come of the events following the truce was the discovery of an ancient jumpgate that lead to the Greenwater Nebula - a region of space where a new frontier of valuable resources awaited.
